Fairways, flamingos and a fruity feast

Until I started researching different Puerto Vallarta vacation experiences, I never would have thought it a destination for world-class golf. But, sure enough, it's got an amazing course right on the ocean.

Even though I'm not a golfer, I took in a lesson on the immaculate fairways of Marina Vallarta Club de Golf.

Nestled right in the heart of the Marina Vallarta district, this 18-hole championship course, designed by Joe Finger, is a true tropical paradise for golfers -- and those just starting out.

From the moment I stepped onto the first tee, I was captivated by the lush landscape. Towering palms line the fairways, while strategically placed lagoons and water hazards add both beauty and challenge.

The course weaves its way around numerous residential areas and the marina itself, offering glimpses of yachts and the vast ocean beyond. It’s a par-71 layout, stretching over 6,500 yards from the back tees, providing a fair yet engaging test for players of all skill levels.

What struck me most was the incredible natural beauty and the abundance of wildlife. Throughout my round, I spotted a variety of exotic birds, and true to the legends, a few sunbathing iguanas and even a couple of crocodiles casually observing us from the edge of the water features. It truly felt like playing golf in a nature preserve.

The course itself was in superb condition – the greens were fast and true, and the fairways were meticulously maintained. One hole that particularly stood out was the 18th, a challenging par-5 that doglegs around a large lake, demanding both distance and precision to finish strong. Despite a less-than-perfect shot on one (all!) of the water holes, the sheer beauty of the surroundings made any frustration quickly dissipate.

Seriously, I've never golfed before in my life so I appreciated the patience of those fellow players who, in some cases, even offered to give me tips as I slowly made my way around the course -- and I held up their games.

The staff at Marina Vallarta Club de Golf were incredibly welcoming and professional, ensuring a smooth and enjoyable experience from check-in to the 19th hole. The pro shop is well-stocked, and the clubhouse offers a comfortable spot to relax after your round, with excellent views of the course.

If you're planning a trip to Puerto Vallarta and have a passion for golf, it's worth a visit to Marina Vallarta Club de Golf.

It’s more than just a round of golf; it’s an immersive experience that combines the leisure sport with the stunning natural beauty of Mexico’s Pacific coast.

Don't forget your camera, as the views (and the wildlife encounters) are truly memorable.
