Bota Bota = boat-ahh boat-ahh

If there's one thing a Buff Boy needs to do when he travels, it's check out a spa in the destination city. So, here we are in Montreal!

Enter (literally) the renowned Bota Bota, spa-sur-l'eau, a floating spa nestled in the city's historic Old Port. I had heard whispers of its unique concept and serene atmosphere and I was eager to immerse myself in its aquatic embrace.

From the moment I approached the Old Port, I could see it – a magnificent, multi-decked ferry, repurposed with sleek, modern lines, yet retaining its historical essence. The very idea of a spa on a ship immediately intrigued me.

As I stepped onto the gangway and then aboard the vessel, I felt as though I was embarking on a journey, not just a spa visit. The reception area was an oasis of calm, with soft lighting, natural wood and the gentle murmur of water. The staff greeted me warmly, providing a map of the ship, a plush robe and a pair of sandals, setting the tone for the peaceful hours ahead.

My primary goal was to experience the hydrothermal water circuit, the very heart of Bota Bota’s philosophy. This ancient Nordic tradition involves alternating between hot, cold and relaxation periods to stimulate circulation and promote deep relaxation.

I started my journey on the upper deck, where steaming outdoor hot tubs offered panoramic views of the Jacques Cartier Bridge and the city skyline. Submerging myself in the warm, bubbling water, with the crisp Montreal air on my face, was an immediate release. I could feel the day’s tension beginning to melt away, replaced by a profound sense of ease.

From the outdoor hot tubs, I ventured into the various saunas. There was a dry sauna with a massive window overlooking the St. Lawrence River, allowing me to take in the serene river scene while the heat enveloped me. Another favorite was the eucalyptus steam bath, where the aromatic mist cleared my mind and opened my airways, leaving me feeling incredibly light and refreshed. Each hot experience was designed to warm the body thoroughly, preparing it for the invigorating cold plunge that followed.

And invigorate it did! After a good sweat, I braved the cold plunges. Bota Bota offers various options, from icy showers to outdoor cold baths. The initial shock of the cold water was undeniably intense, but I embraced it, knowing the benefits it brought. My skin tingled, my heart rate surged briefly and then a profound sense of alertness and clarity washed over me. It was a jolt that awakened every cell in my body, a stark, exhilarating contrast to the warmth that preceded it.

Following the hot and cold cycles, the final, crucial step was relaxation. Bota Bota truly excels in this aspect, offering an array of dedicated relaxation zones. I discovered several quiet rooms with comfortable loungers, some dimly lit for deep rest, others with large windows offering more stunning views of the city. My favorite was the "Garden on the Water," a beautiful green space on the deck with hammocks and lounge chairs, providing a peaceful outdoor retreat. I spent time listening to the gentle lapping of the waves against the ship, reading a book, or simply closing my eyes and letting the tranquility wash over me. The "silent rule" enforced throughout the water circuit was a true blessing, allowing for complete introspection and peace without the distraction of chatter.

What truly sets Bota Bota apart is its unique blend of historical charm, modern design and its unparalleled location. Being on the water adds an entirely different dimension to the spa experience; there's a gentle sway, a specific quality of light and the ever-present sound of the river that creates an incredibly soothing atmosphere. It’s a complete disconnect from the urban hustle just steps away, yet remains firmly connected to the city’s heart through its historic setting.

If you're planning a visit to Bota Bota, I offer a few insider tips: I highly recommend booking your circuit or treatments in advance, especially during peak seasons or weekends. (Because I was a media guest, they welcomed me in 30 minutes before opening for the day. I kinda loved having the place to myself for a while, though it did fill up quickly.)

While they provide robes and towels, bringing your own reusable water bottle is a good idea to stay hydrated. And most importantly, embrace the silence! It's an integral part of the experience, allowing for deep relaxation and introspection.

It’s an urban escape that feels worlds away, a unique blend of heritage and contemporary wellness. As I disembarked, feeling utterly refreshed and renewed, I knew this wasn't just a place I’d visit once. Bota Bota has earned a permanent spot on my "must-do" list whenever I find myself in the enchanting city of Montreal. It truly is a serene voyage for the soul.
